NMCA Shreveport Editorial By Dr.Digs
Warm weather finally joined the NMCA tour after a couple of events that had COLD weather. At Red River Raceway some of the most impressive performances were turned in by Tony Christian, Marc Dantoni, Gary Rohe, and Bruce LaGory.
In Pro Street, Tony Christian showed he can run consistent 6.80's @ 200 miles per hour plus with his 1957 Chevy, as he ripped off six second blasts all weekend. Christian had low elapsed time at 6.833 and appeared to be a sure winner, as he had lane choice in the final against his arch rival Bob Rieger. Christian put Rieger in the left lane which many racers had been having trouble with as the day went on. Christian put a slight holeshot on Rieger at the start in the final, then the '57 overpowered the track in the favored right lane. The Pro Street final then began to look more like a fuel alterd race out of the mid 1960's as both Christian and Rieger had their hands full. Both these guys are serious about winning and this final proved it! They both worked on and off the throttle with their machines swaying from side to side in their respective lanes all the way down the 1320. Rieger was very close to the wall in the left lane near the finish line, but he kept his foot on the loud pedal of the turbocharged 1999 S-10 Truck long enough to get the win light. Rieger's 7.24 @ 159 beat Christian's 7.60 @ 154 in the wild Pro Street final!
In Outlaw Street, Marc Dantoni showed ET bracket racer type consistency all weekend at Red River. Dantoni's 1997 Monte Carlo faced his points rival Hank Hill in the final round. Hill had been running 6.90's at will all weekend with his mountain motored 1996 T-Bird. The bad news for Hill was that Dantoni was running 6.80's all weekend like nobody's business with his 707 cubic inch Chevy, and Dantoni had lane choice in the final, meaning Hill got to race in the tricky left lane. Dantoni ripped to low elapsed time and top speed of the meet in the final at 6.808, 207.59 with the Monte Carlo while Hill shook his way to a 13 second shut off run in the left lane. Hill has been in every Outlaw final round this year in NMCA racing.
Mister EZ Street, Gary Rohe won big again at Red River this past weekend with his 1980 Mustang. Rohe ran 162 miles per hour every round of eliminations! That is not a misprint! 162 m.p.h. in EZ Street! Hard to believe, but true! Rohe used an 8.645 second run @ 162.02 to cover Scott Budisalich in the all Mustang EZ Street final. Scott shut off to a 13 second run in the final. Rohe's best speed was 162.78, a new NMCA record, unreal given the weather conditions!
Bruce LaGory was the wheelie king of the event and won the Real Street class too. LaGory did crowd pleasing wheelies all weekend with his 1969 Barracuda. Bruce topped Mike Wear and his Camaro in the final with a 9.170 @ 151.41 to cover Wear's 9.346 @ 148.27 m.p.h. LaGory turns awesome top end speeds with the 'Cuda!
On a sad note, Bill Gnegy a Jet Dragster racer had a serious crash just past the finish line on a 298 mile per hour run Sunday. The local Shreveport news reported he was listed in serious condition at an area hospital late Sunday.
