Goodguys Indy Editorial By Dr.Digs
The Goodguys Hot Rod Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park in Clermont, Indiana this past weekend, June 9, 10, & 11 was incredible! Over 5000 street rods and over 400 race cars took part in this mammoth event. Goodguys rules allow any car 1972 and earlier to participate. Thousands and thousands of automotive enthusiasts were on hand to enjoy a great weekend of hot rodding action.
The action in Nostalgia Top Fuel was worth the price of admission alone. Jack Harris of Kaysville, Utah, set the pace in qualifying at 6.052 seconds, 240.83 miles per hour, for the number one spot. Roger Lechtenberg ripped to a dynamite 5.982 blast in the first round of eliminations with his Cedar Falls, Iowa, based Top Fueler for Low E.T. of the meet. Lechtenberg crossed the center line against eventual winner Larry Gotelli in the semis to put his five second mount on the trailer, it was a lucky turn of events for Gotelli, as he had red-lighted to Lechtenberg. The Nostalgia Top Fuel final was worth the price of admission alone. Larry Gotelli and his Gotelli's Speed Shop digger from South San Francisco, California made the most of getting back into the show on the "first or worst" rule, as Gotelli won a very close Nostalgia Top Fuel final. Facing low qualifier Jack Harris and the "Nitro Thunder" car in the final, Gotelli charged to a 6.015 @ 240.64 to stop the oh so close 6.016 @ 244.23 laid down by Harris! The crowd went wild!
The Nostalgia Top Fuel "2" race for cars that did not make the top 8 spots in Nostalgia Top Fuel qualifying saw Fred Bach of Belleville, Illinois, take the win with the Bach and Gould 427 SOHC Ford powered entry. A 6.588 @ 216.65 did the job for Bach in the final, defeating the 7.314 @ 188.79 shot laid down by runner-up Randy Laurn of Watertown, South Dakota.
Sixteen year old Scott Parks, from Kansas, won the Junior Fuel crown at Goodguys Indy, with a 7.447 blast at 177.44 m.p.h. from his injected small block Chevy rail, defeating low qualifier Charlie Smith's final round 7.563 @ 177.02 with his Chrysler Hemi powered digger. The Oklahoma based veteran Smith had been low qualifier at 7.616, 176.85 m.p.h., earlier in the action.
Other winners at The Goodguys Hot Rod Nationals at Indianapolis were; Greg Jacobsmeyer, '70 Challenger (Nostalgia Funny Car), Ken Speaks, '63 F.E. Dragster (Nostalgia Eliminator), Wade Dahl, '57 F.E. Dragster (Flathead & Inline), Tony Feil, '61 Corvette (Gas Eliminator), Dave Dennis, '48 Austin (Hot Rod 1), Glenn Miller, '32 Ford (Hot Rod 2), Allen George, '62 Chevy (Nostalgia S/S), Elden Miller, '70 Opel GT (Street Machine 1), and Michelle Gerhart, '70 Duster (Street Machine 2).
