But Will You Love Me Tommorow? Acid Porting
By Dan Dvorak

I know you guys have missed me this past week, but I was busy learning the ins and outs so to speak, of ACID PORTING! First of all, its not at all like I imagined. I was under the impression, that you just poured in the acid, and WHAMMO...the port gets bigger! Not so. Actually, ACID PORTING is a misnomer. Should read ACID COVERUP, because the acid does very little work, but color and texture, and provides a uniform look to your work.

Because NHRA wont enforce the rules on this, and they won't allow real porting, I will take this opportunity to level the playing field, and let everyone (who doesn't already know) have the opportunity to gain some horsepower.

What you will need. Hand grinder, and other regular porting tools, cartrige rolls, an air hammer and needle scaler, a plastic flat plate with a vent tube, a tube of silicone, a box of plain old BATTERY ACID, and a fundimental knowledge of what the port likes. (a flow bench, a mule old broken head would be nice, but not entirely necessary as even a novice can look down into a bowl, or port and "see" some bad stuff that has to go)

First step in to grind and polish the port as if you were allowed too (of course your not allowed, but so what?) In stock eliminator, a little goes a long way. Move a little here, blend a little there...here a cut ..there a polish, everywhere a blend, blend, blend. When you are satisfied with your work, Next, the disguise. With the needle scaler..(used to chip welds) at a million blows per minute (Monica, we are playing your song!) peen and pock mark all your work and pene it into the areas you haven't worked on and peen...peen...peen untill the peening looks uniform through out. You are now ready for the ACID. Take the work outside in a well ventilated area. Protect the areas not to be etched with silicone sealer, valve guides valve seat, port opening, ( put a junk valve in the head) Turn the head, intake (or exhaust ) side up and use a clear plexiglas plate similiar to what you use to CC the head, except that it should have a tube through it that extends upward for filling, AND to allow the ACID to expand and breathe while its doing its foul deed. BE VERY CAREFUL! WEAR A MASK, GLOVES AND EYEWEAR. Prop the head up well! Carefully fill the port to the tube. AND LET IT EAT! Unfortunately, it will only remove 1cc per 24 hours. ( at that rate, it would take 480 days to ACID PORT a 6 pack head.. thats why you use tools first. Anyway, 24 hours is fine to produce that FACTORY FRESH color. AGAIN BEING CAREFUL...pour off the contents of the port and dispose of properly. Flush with clear water, remove silicone, and flush again.

The trick here is called relativity. If you do only one port, you WILL get busted(!), because it is slightly different from the others. So do ALL the ports, as well non port surfaces that show up against your finished "work"

These were the results of my first port.
Lift(Inches) CFM Before CFM After
0.100 69 68
0.200 140 142
0.300 201 212
0.400 240 251
0.500 255 268

THE QUESTION: WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW? Sure I would like to be competitive with the HARD WORKERS...but like this? And....WOULD YOU STILL LOVE ME TOMORROW?
